A gift is given willingly—usually without having an expectation placed upon it. Sure, when you're a kid, you might have gotten away with giving Mom and Dad some direction as to what to get you so that you didn't end up with something that wasn't worth anyone's money or time. For instance, if you asked your parents for just a generic "Gameboy game," you'd wind up with some blockbuster movie cash grab that was almost unplayable and made by some third-party developer instead of the Pokemon game you really wanted. But in this example, you're a literal child and can get away with being a little bit more expectant and entitled. Even then, your parents weren't going to take kindly to you demanding something too expensive and entirely out of left field.
In this story, however, this guy's younger sister is a grown adult woman and has no excuse for making the outrageous demands she is making. As readers declared in the comments when they voted her to be soundly in the wrong for declaring that a $20k gift from her brother wasn't enough and that she wanted him to cover the entire $100k cost of her wedding instead.
